Pine Knoll Shores is one of the areas I have already worked in. The island is a different job from the mainland: most of it is second homes and rentals, the construction is slab or pilings, and the floors take abuse that a primary residence never sees.
Sand, wet feet and suitcases are hard on a floor. Tile is one of the few materials that survives it, and the choices that matter here are different from the ones that matter inland.
What the homes here are like
Tile work is shaped by what is under the floor, and that varies a lot across Eastern North Carolina.
Salt air and humidity come up through the slab and in through every opening. That is why laminate and engineered wood keep failing on this island and why owners keep converting to porcelain. Over a slab the concerns are moisture and existing cracks, which get isolated rather than tiled straight over. Over pilings it is movement, which an uncoupling membrane handles.
Sand is the thing nobody plans for. It works into grout joints and it is what makes a rental floor look tired two seasons in. Larger format porcelain with fewer joints, in a mid-tone that does not show sand, cleans faster and holds up better. A dark floor or a white floor on this island is a cleaning problem; a mid-tone is not.
Oceanfront condos bring their own logistics: HOA rules on work hours, one elevator, parking, and getting material up without marking a shared hallway. Those get planned before the first day rather than improvised.

Atlantic Beach and Pine Knoll Shores are about forty-five minutes from New Bern. I group island jobs into blocks rather than driving out for a half day, so scheduling works best with a little notice.
For rentals, send me the booking calendar and I will fit the work into the gap. Cure times are the one thing I cannot compress.

Questions from homeowners here
Can you work between rental bookings?
Yes. Send me the calendar and I will schedule inside the window. Grout and mortar cure times are fixed, so a three-day gap is a three-day job at most.
What tile holds up best in a beach house?
Large format porcelain, mid-tone, textured finish rated for wet areas. Fewer grout lines means less cleaning and sand shows far less.
Do you deal with HOA rules and condo buildings?
Yes. Tell me the building at the estimate and I will check the work-hour and elevator rules before we set a date.
Is there a travel charge to the island?
Not for a normal-sized job. Very small repairs out here may be better handled by someone closer and I will say so.
