The Crystal Coast is the furthest regular run I make, and it is worth the drive because the work here is different. Salt air, sand, humidity and rental turnover are hard on floors, and tile is one of the few materials that actually holds up.

A lot of this is second homes and rentals, which means scheduling between bookings and finishing on the date promised. I plan these jobs in blocks rather than stretching them across weeks.

What the homes here are like

Tile work is shaped by what is under the floor, and that varies a lot across Eastern North Carolina.

Coastal construction here is mostly slab or pilings, and both bring humidity up through the floor. That is why laminate and engineered wood keep failing in these houses and why so many owners end up converting to porcelain. Over a slab, the concerns are moisture and existing cracks; over pilings, it is movement, which an uncoupling membrane handles.

Rental properties take abuse that a primary residence does not — sand, wet feet, suitcases. Larger format porcelain with fewer grout lines cleans faster and holds up better, and it is what I steer rental owners toward.

Beaufort's older homes are a different job again: wood framing, settled floors, and the same leveling work that downtown New Bern needs.

Morehead City and Newport are about a forty-five minute drive. Scheduling works best in blocks, so I usually group coastal jobs together rather than driving out for a half day.

For rental properties, give me the booking calendar and I will fit the work into the window rather than asking you to block extra days.

Questions from homeowners here

Do you charge for travel to the Crystal Coast?

Not for a normal-sized job. For a very small repair, it may be more honest to point you to someone closer, and I will say so.

Can you work between rental bookings?

Yes. Send me the calendar and I will schedule inside the gap. Cure times are the one thing I cannot compress.

What tile holds up best in a beach house?

Large format porcelain, in a mid-tone that hides sand, with a textured finish rated for wet areas. Fewer grout lines means less cleaning.

Do you do outdoor and pool-area tile?

Some. It depends on the substrate and the exposure. Send photos and I will tell you whether it is a job I would stand behind.
