New Bern is where I live and where most of my work is. If you are in town, I can usually be out to look at a job within a day or two, and that matters more than it sounds — the hardest part of hiring a tile installer around here is getting one to show up at all.

Everything from a single bathroom floor in Ghent to a full first floor in Carolina Colours. Same person quotes it and installs it.

What the homes here are like

Tile work is shaped by what is under the floor, and that varies a lot across Eastern North Carolina.

New Bern housing splits cleanly in two, and the tile work is different for each. Downtown, Ghent and Riverside are full of homes from the 1900s through the 1940s — wood framing over a crawlspace, floors that have settled, and subfloors that almost always need leveling before large format tile goes down. Skipping that step in a Ghent house is how you get a cracked floor in eighteen months.

The newer developments — Carolina Colours, Brices Creek, Taberna, Greenbrier — are mostly slab-on-grade or newer framing. Flatter to start with, but slabs come with their own question: existing cracks have to be isolated rather than tiled straight over, or the crack telegraphs right through the tile.

Fairfield Harbour and the waterfront streets add humidity and the occasional flood-repair job. Porcelain is the right call in almost every one of those houses.

Jobs within New Bern carry no travel charge, and I can often work around a tight schedule because I am not driving an hour each way.

If you are in a historic district home, tell me early — there are sometimes constraints on what can be changed, and it is better to know before the demo than during it.

Questions from homeowners here

How fast can you get out to look at a job in New Bern?

Usually within a day or two. Send photos through the estimate form and I can often give you a ballpark before I even get there.

Do you work in the historic district?

Yes. Older homes need more prep and I quote them that way rather than pretending the floor is flat.

Do you charge for travel in New Bern?

No. Anything inside New Bern, Bridgeton or James City is home turf.

Can you match tile in an older home?

Sometimes, for a repair. Discontinued tile is often impossible to match exactly — I will tell you honestly whether a patch will look like a patch.
