Pamlico County is one of the areas I have already worked in, and it is close enough to New Bern that scheduling is easy and there is no travel charge.

It is also a county where word travels. Most of the work here comes from someone telling a neighbour, which is a good reason to do the job properly and a bad reason to cut corners on anything.

What the homes here are like

Tile work is shaped by what is under the floor, and that varies a lot across Eastern North Carolina.

Oriental and the waterfront communities are mostly retirees and second homes, many of them 1970s through 1990s on crawlspaces. Bathrooms from that era are coming due: original mortar beds, liners that have given up, and framing underneath that is often worse than the homeowner expects. I photograph whatever demo turns up before anything gets covered back over.

Humidity off the Neuse and the Pamlico Sound is constant and it is why wood floors keep failing out here. Porcelain over an uncoupling membrane does not care. A lot of the flooring work in this county is replacing a floor that could not handle the moisture.

Inland, around Bayboro, Grantsboro and Arapahoe, there is more older stock on crawlspace with floors that have settled. Those get checked with a straightedge and leveled before any large format goes down.

Pamlico County is twenty to thirty-five minutes from New Bern depending where you are. No travel charge.

If you are on the water and have had a moisture problem, say so at the estimate. It changes what I recommend underneath the tile, not just the tile.

Questions from homeowners here

Do you come out to Oriental?

Regularly — Pamlico County is one of the places I have already worked and it is a short drive.

My wood floor keeps cupping. Is tile the answer?

Out here, usually. The humidity is not going away and porcelain does not care about it. I will look at what is underneath before I promise anything.

Is there a travel charge?

No. Pamlico County is close enough to New Bern that it is a normal day for me.

Can you redo a 1980s bathroom?

Yes, and expect demo to find more than you hoped. I price for what is likely and tell you straight away if it turns out to be more.
