Trent Woods and River Bend are a short drive from New Bern and a different kind of job. The homes are larger, the material choices are usually better, and the work tends to be full bathroom remodels and whole-floor tile rather than a single room.

This is where most of my natural stone and large format work happens, and both are unforgiving — a 24x48 porcelain tile or a marble floor shows every flaw in the prep underneath it.

What the homes here are like

Tile work is shaped by what is under the floor, and that varies a lot across Eastern North Carolina.

Trent Woods homes are mostly 1970s through 1990s on crawlspace, which means the floor framing has had decades to settle. Before large format tile goes anywhere in these houses, the floor gets checked with a straightedge and leveled where it is out. It adds a day and it is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that cracks along a joist line.

River Bend has a lot of original 1970s and 1980s construction, and a lot of bathrooms that are overdue. Showers from that era were built with mortar beds and liners that have long since given up, so demo usually reveals more than the homeowner expected. I photograph what I find before covering anything.

Both areas back onto the Trent River, so humidity and the occasional water event are real. Porcelain over an uncoupling membrane handles it; engineered wood and laminate do not, which is why so many of these homes are converting.

If you are planning a full bathroom remodel rather than just tile, say so at the estimate — sequencing the plumber, the glass company and me properly saves a week.

Questions from homeowners here

Do you do whole-house tile in Trent Woods?

Regularly. Expect most of a week plus a prep day, and expect me to tell you if the subfloor needs leveling first.

Is large format tile a problem over a crawlspace?

Not if the floor is prepped for it. It is a problem when it is installed as though the floor were a slab. That is the main thing I check before quoting.

Can you work with my designer or contractor?

Yes, and it usually goes better that way. I would rather be in the conversation early than inherit a layout that does not work.

Do you do natural stone?

Marble, travertine and slate, sealed properly. Stone needs more prep and more care than porcelain and I quote it accordingly.
